What is unconventional oil and gas resources
Development of these unconventional resources has significant economic potential as a large portion of oil and gas resources is estimated to exist in unconventional deposits. In Canada, estimates put oil reserves at 174 billion barrels of oil, with 169 billion being in the oil sands - a type of unconventional resource. Unconventional oil and natural gas play a key role in our nation's clean energy future. The U.S. has vast reserves of such resources that are commercially viable as a result of advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies.. These technologies enable greater access to oil and natural gas in shale formations. The oil extracted in this case is no different than the oil from a reservoir that is tapped by a vertical well. On the other end of the spectrum, there heavy types of unconventional oil. Not only Unconventional resources fall into two broad categories: 1. A widespread, low-permeability and -porosity gas- or oil-charged horizon. If the horizon is composed primarily of shale, it is a ^shale gas _ or ^shale oil _ resource; and, 2. Low-permeability and -porosity portions of an oil or gas pool that cannot be developed through Unconventional Oil & Gas. Sometimes unconventional drilling methods are used due to increasing scarcity of retrieving oil and gas using conventional methods. Not always, is a pocket of oil and gas available to be retrieved by drilling and pressure naturally allowing the flow of gas. In this case, unconventional drilling comes in handy. Before we continue with our discourse, let’s find out what the terms conventional and unconventional gas and oil mean. What Is Conventional Oil and Gas? Conventional oil and gas are hydrocarbons that have been accumulated in reservoirs with good oil-water or gas-water contact. These resources are relatively easy to obtain by utilizing the

Unconventional oil and gas refers to the oil and gas resources which cannot be explored, developed and produced by conventional processes just in using the natural pressure of the wells and pumping or compression operations. These unconventional crude oil and natural gas are trapped in the pores of sediments rocks called shale. Comments
This short course introduces unconventional energy resources such as shale gas , tight gas and coal bed methane reservoirs. Coalbed methane, gas hydrates, shale gas, fractured reservoirs, and tight gas sands are considered unconventional resources. See: gas hydrate, heavy oil, shale For the last 40 years, U.S. energy policy has been predicated on the dual notions of growing demand and resource scarcity, especially in relation to oil and Shale Resource systems for oil and gas.
