I bought 4 rolls of "unsearched" wheat pennies from a local coin shop. This chrome/silver 1956 wheat penny was in the last roll, in near Mint condition, close to AU! Is it chromed? Zinc plated The 1956 cent was definitely plated and given the it appears the surface was altered on the 1983 cent also, suggesting it was likely chemically stripped of its copper plating. I was told it is probably coated with another metal, although this one does seem to feel lighter than a my other indian heads. Last night while looking through some old Whitman coin albums I discovered a 1956 penny (no mint mark) that's very shiny and appears to be made from a metal that isn't copper. It's shiny and silver in color. I don't have a magnet handy to test for steel. I don't see a 1956 no mint mark penny that is steel listed in the Red Book.
